  • In a broader sense applied to other eminent Christian teachers
  • Of Barnabas
  • Of Timothy and Silvanus

Missions in the churches of Christ/Christian churches of America
  • James T. and Julia Barclay - Our first American missionaries who established a mission in Jerusalem.
  • Debate over the Missionary Societies (around the time of the Civil War)
  • Comity agreements caused serious problems - a comity agreement is the decision of various denominations to leave territory of others alone.
  • Compromise of basic Bible doctrines
  • Wealthy churches were able to control the societies.
  • Leadership of societies were divided over slavery
  • Societies usurped the local congregations when it came to evangelism

Biblical Principles of Missions
  • Missions need to be biblically sound
  • II John 1:9 - Anyone who goes too far and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God; the one who abides in the teaching, he has both the Father and the Son. 10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house, and do not give him a greeting; 11 for the one who gives him a greeting participates in his evil deeds.
  • Missions need to be accountable to the church
  • Acts 13:3 - Then, when they had fasted and prayed and laid their hands on them, they sent them away.
  • Missions need to be sent out from the local church
  • Acts 14:26-29 - From there they sailed to Antioch, from which they had been commended to the grace of God for the work that they had accomplished. 27 When they had arrived and gathered the church together, they began to report all things that God had done with them and how He had opened a door of faith to the Gentiles. 28 And they spent a long time with the disciples.
  • Missions need prayers
  • Acts 13:3 - Then, when they had fasted and prayed and laid their hands on them, they sent them away.
